HOT-WATER TREATMENT TOLERANCE IN GLADIOLUS CORMELS AND THEIR STATE OF DORMANCY

Authors:   A. Cohen, A. Barzilay, H. Vigodsky-Haas
Abstract:
Cormels of 8 newly-released cultivars of miniature-gladiolus were exposed to hot-water treatment (HWT) at various temperatures in order to establish a safe procedure for eradication of Fusarium and other pathogens from planting stocks. The cormels, harvested from winter-grown corms, exhibit large variation in their level of dormancy. HWT at 57°C for 30 minutes, generally reserved for highly-dormant cormels, was applied to all the cultivars causing no apparent damage to either dormant or non-dormant cormels and improving their germination significantly. HWT at 58°C, applied to 5 of the 8 cultivars, also improved germination regardless of their state of dormancy. The results demonstrate a lack of direct relationship between cormel's dormancy and their ability to withstand a harsh HWT, indicating, that the two are separate genetic traits. The effect of extended cold-storage following HWT on cormel germination was, also, studied. Germination of hot-water treated non-dormant cormels was reduced after storage at 2°C, but improved after storage at 5°C. Dormant cormels germinated better following storage at either temperatures.
