NECK ROT DISEASE OF NARCISSUS CAUSED BY FUSARIUM OXYSPORUM F. SP. NARCISSI |

| Abstract:
Dry bulb exports of Narcissus from the UK have increased substantially over the past ten years. Inspections for export have led to the observation of a disease known as neck rot. By 1980 neck rot was responsible for more rejected bulb consignments submitted for export licences than basal rot. The cause of the disease at that time was unknown. Isolations from failed consignments and pathogenicity tests have shown that the disease is caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. narcissi. A detailed survey of crop husbandry practices amongst bulb exporters in the UK has shown that there is a relationship between leaf flailing and bulb lifting. Other crop husbandry practices were also indicated in the development of the disease. Whereas the associated condition basal rot is largely confined to Golden Harvest and Carlton, neck rot was found in most of the cultivars inspected. | |
