STRUCTURE AND APPLICATIONS OF A PRODUCTION MODEL IN TULIP BULB CULTURE

Authors:   G.G.M. van der Valk, J.B.H.M. van Gils
Abstract:
The model ROCROP may serve as a synthesis of existing knowledge and as a tool for planning field research and grower's production.

The model assumes that tulip leaves grow from the seed-bulbs. A crop is regarded as a series of endless, semi-light permeable blocks. Gross photosynthesis of a closed crop canopy is calculated from radiation data. Light interception in the blocks is used for computation of production and storage of dry matter in the bulbs of the row crop. The bulk yield is split up into yields per bulb-size class using distribution models.

The (programmed) model requires input of seed-bulb weight, planting density and planting system, cultivar-specific leaf development and bulb grading data, daily global radiation, latitude, dates of emergence and senescence and dates and amounts of leaf damage. The effects of variations in these input data on graded yields can be estimated.

The model ROCROP is therefore a tool for growers to estimate the effects of tactical decisions on crop management (such as planting-stock management) and effects of diseases on the yield.
