THE BREEDING OF INTERSPECIES AND INTERGENERA HYBRIDS IN THE AMARYLLIDACEAE

Authors:   A.F. Coertze, E. Louw
Abstract:
A breeding programme on the South African Amaryllidaceae was initiated during 1986. The family includes 212 indigenous species having a wide variety of characteristics. A gene bank has been established under protecting structures and is being expanded continuously.

The aim of the breeding work is to develop new interspecies and intergenera hybrids suitable as pot plants and/or cut flowers for commercial production. Certain interspecies and intergenera crosses have been accomplished and the first Nerine hybrids started flowering since the beginning of 1989.
