ISHS Acta Horticulturae 266: V International Symposium on Flower Buds

EFFECTS OF ETHYLENE ACTION INHIBITORS AND ACC ON INDUCTION OF FLOWER BUDS OF DUTCH IRIS CV. BLUE MAGIC

Authors:   D. Yue, H. Imanishi
Abstract:
When bulbs were exposed to ethylene after pretreatment with bicyclo [2,2,1] hepta-diene (2,5-norbornadiene, NBD) or ethylene was applied with NBD, effects of ethylene to ensure flower bud formation and stimulate the activity of ethylene forming enzyme (EFE) and production of aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) were counteracted by NBD. But NBD did not counteract ethylene effects when applied after exposing bulbs to ethylene. Soaking bulbs in ACC was as effective as exposing them to ethylene to obtain high percentage of flower formation. Activity of EFE and ethylene concentration of the gas extracted from these bulbs were higher in bulbs soaked in ACC than in control bulbs.
