TIME OF FLOWER BUD DIFFERENTIATION IN ASIATIC HYBRID LILIES |

| Abstract:
This study was conducted to classify the types of flower development of 85 Asiatic hybrid lilies and to clarify their response to low temperature. Among 85 cultivars, 27 (31%) commenced flower bud initiation inside the bulb, while 58 (69%) started and completed the flowers after shoot emergence. With a few exceptions, the former type of lilies flowered earlier than bulbs those in the latter. Therefore, the types of flower development could be estimated from the time of natural anthesis. No relationship between shoot growth and flower initiation was observed, but bulbs grown in a cool place had always a weak dormancy and faster shoot elongation. When bulbs of cultivars which flower differentiation begin inside the bulb were freeze-stored, it was necessary to start precooling earlier when the bulbs were grown in cold places. When bulbs of such a cultivar are forced by the low temperature treatment, the cooling temperature should be about 1 °C to produce flowers of high quality. | |
