EFFECTS OF LOW LIGHT INTENSITY AND LOW TEMPERATURE GIVEN AT DIFFERENT DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES ON FLOWERING OF GLADIOLUS

Abstract:
Gladiolus plants (cv. Traveler) were exposed to low light intensity or low temperature conditions at various developmental stages. Plants were most sensitive to low light intensity at the 4–5 leaf stage. Low light intensity during this period resulted in a decrease in the percentage of flowering and the number of florets per flowered spike. Low light intensity given at the 6–7 leaf stage reduced only the number of florets per spike. The developmental stage most sensitive to low temperature was at the 6 leaf stage and at this stage low temperature caused a reduction in flowering percentage under low irradiance. Artificial LD lighting was very effective in preventing a decrease in flowering percentage and number of florets per spike.
