ISHS Acta Horticulturae 266: V International Symposium on Flower Buds

FLOWER INITIATION IN THREE ASIATIC HYBRID LILY CULTIVARS

Authors:   X. Zhang, D.J. Beattie, J.W. White
Abstract:
The bulbs of genetically dwarf Asiatic hybrid lilies 'Rouge' 'Orange', and 'Pink', which had never received any less than 14°C temperature treatments, were examined anatomically to study their temperature requirements for flower bud initiation. The bulbs were at different maturation phases, and of different sizes. The relationships between flower initiation and bulb age and bulb size were studied. Bulbs initiated flower buds without any cold treatments, but appeared to need to reach a certain maturation phase to be able to initiate flower buds regardless of the bulb sizes. 'Rouge' reached the maturation phase earliest and 'Orange' latest with 'Pink' in between. In general, the larger the bulbs of a cultivar, the more flower buds they initiated. Although bulbs of 'Rouge' were smallest, they had the largest number of flower buds indicating that bulb size and number of flower buds per bulb were cultivar dependent.
