ISHS Acta Horticulturae 266: V International Symposium on Flower Buds

BUD ABNORMALITIES DURING YEAR-ROUND FORCING OF ASIATIC HYBRID LILIES

Author:   Mark S. Roh
Abstract:
Asiatic hybrid lilies, 'Red Carpet', 'Inferno', 'Cherub', 'Sunray', and 'Connecticut Lemonglow' were forced year-round from frozen bulbs to obtain information on earliness of flowering and flower bud abnormalities. Early flowering 'Red Carpet', 'Inferno' and 'Cherub' can be forced in 50 days from June to August and 70 days from November to March. Late flowering 'Sunray' and 'Connecticut Lemonglow' can be forced in 65 days from June to August and 80 days from November to March. Flower buds were classified as aborted, blasted, or abscissed according to the abnormality which failed to develop normally. As the duration of bulb freezing increased, the number of normal primary, secondary and tertiary buds decreased, however, the number of blasted primary, and aborted secondary and tertiary buds increased. The number of blasted buds was higher in the early flowering cultivars while the number of aborted buds was higher in the late flowering cultivars.
