| Abstract:
During the past few years, several species of specialty bulbs and corms have been investigated as to their possible use as potplant. Small bulb species with a maximum height of 20 – 25 cm were used in this project. Good results were obtained with Anemone blanda, Fritillaria meleagris and Oxalis adenophylla for forcing in January, February and March. The plants showed different reactions to the forcing conditions in the experiments. Plant height of Anemone blanda and Fritillaria meleagris was hardly influenced by temperature or duration of cooling, unlike the height of Oxalis adenophylla. Flowering percentage or number of flowers per corm was raised by using a cooling temperature of 5°C or lower instead of 9°C. Greenhouse temperature strongly influenced flowering results in Anemone blanda and Fritillaria meleagris. A temperature of 18°C, especially during forcing in January, caused a higher percentage of flower abortion when compared to a greenhouse temperature of 12°C. Storage conditions also influenced flowering: loss of water during storage caused flower abortion. | |
