ATTEMPTS TO DETECT XANTHOMONAS FRAGARIAE IN SYMPTOMLESS STRAWBERRY PLANTS |

| Abstract:
Xanthomonas fragariae is a quarantine phytopathogenic bacterium which is spreading across Europe with the trade of plant propagation material. Visual inspection of the strawberry plant lots on the market is not sufficient for sanitary control since the pathogen may be carried in almost invisible infection pockets in the crown or infected plant residues. This study aimed to set up a method to detect X. fragariae in symptomless plants. The method involved the homogenizing of a sample of strawberry plants and a standard procedure for extraction and concentration of bacteria from the pulp to obtain a final pellet. This was used for immunofluorescence staining. The sensitivity threshold of the method was evaluated. This method has already been used to certify propagation material produced in Italy and to check imported lots. | |
