STUDIES ON THE INTERACTION BETWEEN NEMATODES AND FUNGI IN INFECTING STRAWBERRY PLANTS |

| Abstract:
Population density of root lesion nematode, Pratylenchus penetrans, was distinctly higher in the root and soil samples from plants showing Verticillium wilt symptoms than from healthy looking plants in strawberry commercial plantings in 1971 and 1972. Results of eleven pot experiments on the interaction between three plant parasitic nematodes and four soil inhibiting fungi and its effect on strawberry plants were not consistant. They however, confirmed the possibility of interaction of P. penetrans with V. dahliae. It was also shown that this nematode can interact with F. oxysporum, R. fragariae and Cylindrocarpon destructans, M. hapla with V. dahliae, Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizoctonia fragariae, and Longidorus elongatus with R. fragariae. Degree of interaction, as shown in one of the experiment, was higher when nematodes and fungi were applied into unsterilised soil than into heat sterilised soil. | |
