ISHS Acta Horticulturae 265: International Strawberry Symposium

THE PRODUCTION OF CERTIFIED STRAWBERRY MOTHER PLANTS FOR COMMERCIAL RUNNER PRODUCTION

Authors:   M. BEECH, J. STICKELS
Abstract:
The Institute of Horticultural Research (IHR), East Malling annually supplies the Nuclear Stocks Association (NSA) of the UK with fresh stocks of true-to-type strawberry mother plants free from known viruses, pests and diseases. The work of selecting and testing strawberry varieties started in 1931 and since this time has provided propagators with plant material of the highest health status. The scheme is dependent on the involvement of research workers from the IHR, East Malling and from the Agricultural Development Advisory Service (ADAS), and of plant propagators and growers. The techniques and processes involved are complex and time-consuming but the system has proved flexible enough to meet the changing demands of the UK strawberry industry.
