GERMPLASM EVALUATION FOR RESISTANCE TO FUNGUS-INCITED DISEASES

Authors:   John L. Maas, Gene J. Galletta
Abstract:
The identification of germplasm sources resistant to various diseases and the inheritance of disease resistance have become increasingly important in developing commercially acceptable cultivars of the strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.). Several of the diseases important in North America are reviewed with emphasis on availability of sources of resistance with other plant or fruit characteristics. New information about epidemiology and host resistance to Phytophthora fragariae Hickman (red stele root rot), Verticillium spp. (wilt), and Colletotrichum spp. (anthracnose) will hopefully bring about a better understanding of the problems associated with breeding for resistance to these pathogens.
