PROFITABILITY OF U.S. STRAWBERRY PRODUCTION UNDER ALTERNATIVE MANAGEMENT AND MARKETING OPTIONS |

| Abstract:
Strawberries are an internationally traded commodity either as fresh or frozen. During 1986, the United States consumed 325,506 metric tons of fresh and 150,100 metric tons of frozen strawberries. Of this, international imports accounted for only 1.7 percent of the fresh total and 15.3 percent of the frozen, while production in California accounted for 74.4 percent of the fresh and 72.2 percent of the frozen. Within a growing market for both fresh and frozen strawberries, growers in California have been able to expand both production volume and market share because of higher yields and a longer harvest season. In order to become more competitive in the frozen market, growers in other producing regions will have to increase their yields and involvement in fresh markets, or decrease harvest costs, which make up the largest part of production costs. | |
