SHELF LIFE AND FRUIT QUALITY OF STRAWBERRY VARIETIES AND SELECTIONS AFTER STORAGE |

| Abstract:
Fruit quality at picking (firmness, compression strength and skin colour) was tested, during five years, on 27 cultivars, 3 U.S. and 151 Italian strawberry selections. Also their storage ability was investigated measuring weight loss, percentage of rots, bruising and calyx withering. Cardinal, Ferrara, 77.64.4, 73.51.6 and 80.52.1 were the best for storage; the berries of these selections were very firm. The berries of Pocahontas, Savio, 79.2.2, 79.206.5 and 79.202.9 were the worst for storage life. A high negative correlation was found between the compression strength and the incidence (%) of rots during storage. The compression test appeared to be more reliable than the pressure test in predicting the susceptibility to rotting. Nevertherless, the Cesena and Dana berries, although rather soft at harvest and susceptible to bruising, showed a low percentage of rots. The examination of a large number of selections, with known parentage, showed that the varieties Earliglow and MdUS 3816 had good combining ability and were particularly suitable, in a breeding programme, for transfering a high tolerance to Botrytis. | |
