EVALUATION OF THE USABILITY OF RUNNERS OF STRAWBERRY CULTIVARS IN COLD STORAGE

Authors:   G. Cieslinski, B. Borecka
Abstract:
The usability of runner plants of 6 cultivars (Senga Sengana, Redgauntlet, Surprise des Halles, Kama, Paula and Dukat) was evaluated Plants were lifted on three different dates in the autumn and twice in the spring. The plants were stored at temperature of -1°C. Before storage plants were cleaned and defoliated. They were removed from cold storage in July.

The differences between tested cultivars were found. Runner plants of Senga Sengana cv. stored the best regardless of the date of plant lifting - the losses amounted to 0.05% to 8.46%. Plants of Redgauntlet cv. and Kama cv. lifted in December stored like plants of Senga Sengana cv. however plants of Redgauntlet cv. lifted in October showed a bigger tendency to decay. Surprise des Halles cv. proved to be the worst for cold storage. The losses of plants of this cultivar amounted to 4.22% to 97.20%. The cultivars Dukat and Paula should be included into the group of cultivars, which showed a lower level of usability for cold storage. Differences between root-starch content were found.
