MICROPROPAGATION OF STRAWBERRY CVS CACANSKA RANA AND SENGA SENGANA, POMOLOGICAL-BIOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MICROPROPAGATED PLANTS

Authors:   R. Cerovic, D. Ruzic
Abstract:
Two leading strawberry cultivars in the Yugoslav production plantings, Senga Sengana and Cacanska Rana, have been successfully propagated in vitro.

The aseptic culture was obtained from explants 0.5–0.8 mm long. The cv. C. Rana was successfully multiplied on MS medium with (in mgl-1): BAP 1, IBA 0.5 and GA3 0.1. The best proliferation medium for cv. S. Sengana was MS with (mgl-1) BAP, 0.5; IBA, 0.1 and GA3, 0.1.

The best rooting medium for both cultivars was MS/2 with activated charcoal at 1000 mgl-1) and IBA l mgl-1.

Pomological fruit properties of tissue culture-propagated (TC) plants in the first year of trial were considerably lower than those of standard runner-propagated (ST) plants, whereas in the second year these differences were only slight and, in some cases, especially in fruit weight, (TC) plants proved even superior.

Biochemical fruit characteristics of TC plants are within the expected values for the cultivars tested, and somewhat lower values in the second year are due to unfavourable climatic conditions at ripening time.
