| Abstract:
In vitro micropropagated strawberry plants cv. 'Gorella' were acclimatized and grown under controlled environments in order to characterize their flowering requirement and habit. Qualitative responses of these plants to daylength were identical to those of material propagated by conventional runnering. Flower initiation was stimulated by short days (SD) while inflorescence development was promoted by long days (LD). Highly floriferous plants were observed repeatedly. This phenomenon resulted clearly from an increased number of flowers per inflorescence and possibly, but to a lesser extent, from an enhanced production of trusses per plant. It occurred more frequently when the number of in vitro sub-cultures on the multiplication medium was high. It persisted in the first progeny of runner-plants derived from tissue cultured plants exhibiting this disorder. | |
