EXPERIMENTS ON WEED CONTROL IN OPEN FIELD GROWN STRAWBERRIES IN IRELAND

Author:   P. MacGiolla Ri
Abstract:
The effects of seven residual herbicides applied to newly planted and established field grown strawberries, c.v. Cambridge Favourite, were investigated in 1985, 1986 and 1987. The herbicides evaluated were lenacil as control, pendimethalin, napropamide, metamitron, ethofumesate, oxyfluorfen and a tank mixture of napropamide and pendimethalin. The plots were harvested in 1986 and 1987 and oxyflurofen was the only treatment to significantly depress yields. Weeds were counted, identified and removed where necessary during the active growing season in 1985, 1986 and 1987. The results show that napropamide was significantly effective in controlling Ranunculus repens, Poa annua and Viola arvensis in 1985 and Ranunculus repens in 1986 and 1987. The results confirm that napropamide can be used on freshly planted strawberries under Irish conditions. The tank mixture of napropamide and pendimethalin gave significant control of R. repens in 1986 and 1987 and was the most cost effective programme in this trial.
