ISHS Acta Horticulturae 265: International Strawberry Symposium

THE INFLUENCE OF WINTER GIBBERELLIC ACID APPLICATIONS ON EARLINESS, PRODUCTIVITY AND OTHER PARAMETERS OF QUALITY IN STRAWBERRY CULTIVATION (FRAGARIA X ANANASSA DUCH.) ON THE SPANISH MEDITERRANEAN COAST

Authors:   S. López-Galarza, B. Pascual, J. Algarda, J.V. Maroto
Abstract:
Winter applications of gibberellic acid (GA) on strawberry plants can advance the earliness of the crop, but the response is dependent on both climatic conditions and the cultivar grown.

Different experiments were carried out in Valencia (Spain) over a three-year period, applying several doses of GA (20 and 80 ppm) at similar times of the year (first month of winter) using two strawberry varieties (Pajaro and Douglas) under low tunnels in order to study their influence on earliness, productivity, fruit size and other parameters of quality.

Using Pajaro the earliness was advanced by aproximately one month (P 0.01). For Douglas the improvement in earliness using GA were variable (depending on climatic conditions) but they were between 2 and 6 weeks aproximately, with different values of significance.

Neither productivity nor fruit size was affected by GA applications.

No positive differences were noted in the parameters analyzed for the different doses administered in the last of experiments.
