ISHS Acta Horticulturae 265: International Strawberry Symposium

STRAWBERRY BREEDING AT THE AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY IN LUBLIN

Authors:   T. Hulewicz, J.A. Hortynski
Abstract:
The production of strawberries in Poland is carried out on a large scale (cá 56,000 ha) for the fresh market as for processing and freezing. The frozen and canned fruits are destined, to a great extent, for exporting. The leading variety in Poland is Senga Sengana, which in our climate is very high yielding and diseases resistant. However, its quality parameters are not high enough, because the fruits are too soft, not resistant to transporting and the loss of juice after thawing is high (about 25 %). Therefore, we needed to breed some new cultivars more suitable for freezing and resistant to transport. The aim of our breeding programme is to develop high yielding varieties (on the same level as Senga Sengana) with good firmness, nice shape and color of fruits, easy capping ability and resistance to diseases prevalent in Poland.
