GENOTYPE-ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTION IN STRAWBERRY BREEDING

Author:   J.A. Hortynski
Abstract:
Analyses of the genotype x environment interaction were made in segregating populations of strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) formed in half-sib and full-sib families. Models of hierarachical S/D and factorial SxD were used. Evaluation of the genotype x environment interaction was made comparing two different methods of estimation:1. traditional based exclusively on the distribution of phenotypic trait variation Vp obtained from ANOVA; 2. based on interclass genetic correlation (trg) combining components of genetic variation (additive, non-additive, possible maternal effects) with environmental factors (years, replications). Evaluation of genotype x environment interaction showed, first of all, a great effect of the interaction genotypes x years on Vp of the examined quantitative traits. Coefficients trg were found to be very useful in estimating the genotype x environment interaction. On this basis, it was shown that the yield of strawberries was more dependent on the interaction genotypes x years than on the genotypes x blocks, however, it was just the opposite in the case of the weight of fruits.
