ISHS Acta Horticulturae 265: International Strawberry Symposium

GENETICS OF RESISTANCE TO PHYTOPHTHORA FRAGARIAE HICKMAN IN STRAWBERRY.

Author:   W.E. van de Weg
Abstract:
Little is known of the genetic base of resistance to Phytophthora fragariae in strawberry. In this paper a start is made with the identification of individual resistance and virulence genes. It is shown that the compatible and incompatible interactions between the American races A1 to A6, A10 and a British isolate on the one hand and the differentials Aberdeen, Blakemore, Climax, Del Norte, Md 683, Perle de Prague, Stelemaster and Yaquina A on the other hand can be described by a gene-for-gene model with five resistance and virulence genes. The identification of individual resistance and virulence genes facilitates the development of an international system for identification of races of P. fragariae and of an adequate set of differentials Besides, this may lead to sophisticated breeding strategies and efficient use of resistance genes by both breeders and growers.
