ISHS Acta Horticulturae 265: International Strawberry Symposium

PRELIMINARY RESULTS IN ROMANIAN STRAWBERRY BREEDING PROGRAM

Authors:   A. Teodorescu, M. Coman, G. Tedorescu, St. Chiriac
Abstract:
Starting with 1978 at the Fruit Research Institute Pitesti, a strawberry breeding program was initiated aiming at completing the old breeding program started 25 years ago at the Fruit Research Station Cluj-Napoca.

The main objectives of this program are to develop new cultivars well adapted to local conditions, having different ripening seasons, high and constant productive potential (2–3 years of bearing cycles) and diseases resistance.

The young seedlings obtained after the sowing of 0.12 millions hybrid seeds were screened for Sphaerotheca macularis resistance before being transferred in the field. Out of 16,750 seedlings grown in this field during 1979–1987, 149 promising selections were selected. Some of those are under certification suchs as:

  • 78.C.5, late ripening (6 days later than Gorella and 4 days than Redgauntlet), high and constant yield potential;
  • 78.E.8, early-medium ripening (3 days earlier than Gorella and 6 days than Redgauntlet) and good quality;
  • 79.H.8, medium ripening, high yield.
