Abstract:
Although the California varieties presently cultivated in the strawberry areas of southern Italy perform well, they do not seem completely adapted to the Italian environment.
Therefore a breeding programme was initiated in 1978 for selecting "in situ" in the progenies of crosses made for southern Italy.
Priority was given to earliness, firmness of the flesh, continuous ripening and high production, as selection criteria.
In the comparative field trials carried out at Metaponto (Basilicata Region) and at Eboli (Campania Region) some California varieties and several advanced selections were tested.
The results showed that the cvs. 'Chandler', 'Douglas', 'Pajaro', 'Parker', 'Santana' and 'Selva' are still good varieties for Metaponto strawberry areas, while sel. 81.131.13 (sel. 74.65.3 x Vernie) is highly promising for Campania Region.
