ISHS Acta Horticulturae 263: International Symposium on Simple Ventilation and Heating Methods for Greenhouses in Mild Winter Climates

INFLUENCE DU CHAUFFAGE DES SERRES SUR LE CYCLE CULTURAL DU MELON ET DE LA TOMATE DANS LE SUD ET LE CENTRE DE LA TUNISIE

Authors:   A. Mougou, H. Verlodt
Abstract:
A comparative study of different sowing dates for early and late season greenhouse crops was undertaken in different sites with heated and unheated greenhouses. The growth cycle of tomato and muskmelon crops was carried out under this different conditions.

The results indicate that heating of greenhouses results in a shorter growing cycle. Geothermal heating performed better passive solar heating, since the first mode of heating results in higher night temperatures, which enhances decreasing of the duration from seeding until the first yield for a muskmelon crop with at least one week for late summer or early autumn sowing, and with 12 to 15 days for a mid autumn seeding. The seasonal and regional influence of heating on the growth cycle of muskmelon is also discussed. Similar results have been obtained for tomato crops.

Considering the obtained results, the authors recommend a cultural calendar for vegetable production under heated greenhouses in the South and the Center of Tunisia, where geothermal ressources are available.
