ISHS Acta Horticulturae 263: International Symposium on Simple Ventilation and Heating Methods for Greenhouses in Mild Winter Climates

INFLUENCE OF DOUBLE PROTECTION ON PEPPER CULTIVATION UNDER GREENHOUSES IN GAFSA (SOUTH-WEST OF TUNISIA)

Authors:   H. Ben Amor, H. Verlodt
Abstract:
During 1986/87, a test of double protection was made on a pepper cultivation (c.v. Dhirat and Beldi) under 3 greenhouses in the experimental station of O.M.V.P.I. in Gafsa (Oasis of the south-west of Tunisia). Plants were transplanted on 17 November 1986 on 8 rows with a normal density (40/80 cm). Two greenhouses were equiped by 4 rows of small tunnels covered by plastic films of 2m width and the last one was as a control.

In the first greenhouse, the small tunnels were covered by double plastic film, one was made of polyethylene E.V.A. 120 microns thick on which another film was placed made of plastic 20 microns thick and spread with alluminum paint. In the second greenhouse, there was only the plastic film E.V.A.

The results were as following: a gain of minimum temperature about 4 to 6°C with double protection compared to the control and 2 or 3°C for the simple protection. During the whole month of February, the average minimum temperature was 7.6°C for the double protection, 5.2°C for the simple protection and 3.9°C for the control. We noted also a gain of precocity about 45 days permitting a gain of 15% of the total production (estimated value 300 D.T., equivalent to 25% of the total) or 0.6 D.T./m2/year and justifies the surplus of investissement needed to spend on such an equipment which was estimated at 0.4 D.T./m2/year.
