Abstract:
Over the 1980–88 period the area under red raspberry in Yugoslavia rose by 86% (from 5 384 ha to 10 015 ha), production by 189% (from 18 309 t to 53 072 t) and production per unit area by 58%. Serbia accounts for 93% of total raspberry area and for 96% of berry production.
Most of the raspberries are grown on individual holdings (96.5%). The export of fruit was on the rise and in 1988 it was six times as large as in 1980 (33 605 t and 4 753 t). Most of the fruit is frozen and the rest is processed or sold on market.
The leading cv is Willamette (70%), followed by Podgorina, Gradina and Malling Exploit.
Raspberries are mainly grown on areas of 0.05 to .5 hectares, with the interrow spacing of 1.8–2.5 m and with 4–8 canes/m.
Canes are pruned at 1.50–1.80 m and new shoots are removed until early June.
The highest yields reached 35 000 kg/ha.
Research work on raspberry is mainly conducted at the Institute in Cacak.
