ISHS Acta Horticulturae 262: V International Symposium on Rubus & Ribes

RASPBERRY BREEDING IN POLAND

Author:   J. Danek
Abstract:
A raspberry breeding program was started in Poland in 1980. The aim of this program is to produce better adapted floricane and primocane fruiting cultivars. The floricane fruiting cultivars need to be winter hardy, productive, produce good quality fruit and have resistance to various diseases and insects. The primocane fruiting cultivars must produce early fruit (early August), be self-supporting, productive and have good fruit quality. Parents for the program have been obtained from the Institute of Horticulture at East Malling (EM) and from the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI). In addition, several European cultivars have been used as well as indigenous selections of Rubus idaeus vulgatus.

Two selections will soon be released from the program. These are a floricane fruiting type, 80083 (EM 3650/3 x EM 2747/78) and a primocane fruiting type, 81221 (Heritage x Zeva Herbsternte).
