EVALUATION OF CANE BURNING MATERIALS FOR RED RASPBERRY

Authors:   Stott W. Howard, Craig B. MacConnell, J. Scott Cameron
Abstract:
The suspension of dinoseb by the United States Environmental Protection Agency left producers without an effective method for the temporary suppression of early-season red raspberry primocane growth. Several alternative chemicals, including acifluorfen, glufosinate, lactofen, and oxyfluorfen, were evaluated and compared to dinoseb for primocane suppression characteristics. When applied to 'Meeker' red raspberry primocanes emerged to 10 cm the ranking of suppression from greatest to least was: oxyfluorfen, lactofen, dinoseb, acifluorfen, and glufosinate. There were no differences in berry size between treatments, including the untreated control. In a separate experiment oxy-fluorfen and acifluorfen applied prior to 'Meeker' and 'Willamette' primocane emergence temporarily suppressed primocane emergence. Higher use rates of oxyfluorfen and acifluorfen resulted in a significant increase in berry size compared to untreated plots.
