EFFECT OF CONTINUAL PRIMOCANE REMOVAL ON SEVERAL RASPBERRY CULTIVARS

Authors:   Jack A. Freeman, V. R. Brookes, Hugh A. Daubeny
Abstract:
A trial of six raspberry (Rubus ideaus L.) cultivars (Chilcotin, Haida, Meeker, Nootka, Skeena, Willamette) was initiated in 1981 on a 4-year old planting to determine recommendations for primocane removal. From 1982 to 1987 inclusive both single and multiple follow-up dinoseb (2-sec-butyl-4,6-dinitrophenol) sprays were applied to all plots which had only one application in 1981. Both yield and number of fruiting canes showed a decrease beginning in 1985. However, plants which had primocanes removed generally had higher yields than the unsprayed control plants. The 1988 fruiting canes were removed early in the season to encourage restoration of the plants. An attempt is made to make cultivar specific recommendations for chemical removal of primocanes.
