DNA "FINGERPRINTS" CAN DISTINGUISH CULTIVARS OF BLACKBERRIES AND RASPBERRIES

Authors:   H. Nybom, B. A. Schaal, Steven H. Rogstad
Abstract:
Analysis of minisatellite DNA is potentially a useful tool for identifying various plant cultivars. Thus 8 closely related blackberry cultivars and 2 raspberry cultivars were analyzed for minisatellite variation. The cultivars could be clearly distinguished from each other by analyzing DNA samples digested with the restriction enzyme Hinf I and labelled with the DNA “fingerprint” probe M13. No intracultivar variation was found; the “fingerprints” were stable and cultivar specific.
