WITHIN-PLANT COMPETITION AND CARBOHYDRATE ECONOMY IN THE RED RASPBERRY

Author:   P. Dalman
Abstract:
The competition between vegetative and fruiting canes of the red raspberry cv. Ottawa was examined on two experiments in the period 1981–86. In the first year the yield of the biennial system was higher than that of the annual system, but later the growth was excessively weakened and the yield did not increase. In the part-biennial system, where the vegetative canes grew without competition from fruiting canes but in the fruiting year there were vegetative canes, the yield did not increase and growth was as weak as in the biennial system. In the second trial, various times for the removal of vegetative canes were studied. When the canes were removed once or four times at a height of 15 cm, the yield was lower than after removal at the beginning of flowering or cropping. The results were contrary to the simple model of competition between vegetative and fruiting canes. Carbohydrate economy of the red raspberry plant is discussed.
