FROST INJURY ASSESSMENT IN CURRANT COLLECTION AT SKIERNIEWICE

Author:   J. Gwozdecki
Abstract:
During the 1986–1987 winter there were two periods of unusually low winter temperatures at Skierniewice, Poland. In January, the minimum temperature at the 2 m level was -30°C and in March, after a warm February, the minimum temperature was -18°C. There was extensive flower bud damage to all currant cultivars maintained in the experimental plots and it was possible to observe relative differences. The least damaged black currant cultivars were Karakol, Matchless, Pensylvanskaya, Ri 1715, Smuglyanka and Typ 3 van Gotz and the least damaged red currants were Devinska, Velkoplodna, London Market, Neapolsky Cerveny and Pomona.
