Abstract:
In Czechoslovakia, at the Research Institute of Bojnice, there has been an active breeding program with red, white and black currants for 30 years.
There have been 378 crosses made.
The best red and white currant selections have been obtained from crosses involving derivatives of Ribes multiflorum and R. sativum.
From some crosses involving two red currant cultivars, approximately one-third of the segregants have produced white fruits.
The best black currant selections have been obtained from crosses involving derivatives of R. nigrum, R. dikuscha and R. bracteosum.
Three black currant cultivars (Otelo, Viola and Eva), two red currant cultivars (Detvan and Tatran) and two white currant cultivars (Primus and Blanka) have been introduced.
