THE USE OF INTERSPECIFIC CROSSES IN BREEDING WINTERHARDY BLACKBERRIES IN FINLAND

Authors:   K.R.E. Selonen, P.M.A. Tigerstedt
Abstract:
Winterhardiness and late-ripening are the most difficult problems for would-be blackberry growers in Finland. We believe that interspecific hybrids between raspberries and blackberries provide the only means of combining early-ripening and hardiness. We have used the collection of blackberries tested under Finnish climatic conditions in our crossing experiments. We utilized embryo culture to obtain maximum survival of hybrid embryos and to propagate enough plants for field tests. 556 hybrid embryos were found from 9995 seeds from the cross between R. idaeus L. x R. allegheniensis Porter. Of these embryos, 64,4 % were recovered via embryo culture.
