ADVANCES IN BREEDING LOW-CHILL RED RASPBERRIES IN CENTRAL MEXICO

Authors:   J. Rodriguez -A, E. Avitia -G
Abstract:
A program was started in 1979 for the purpose of obtaining low-chill red raspberries. Genes for low-chill were found among several commercial red raspberry cultivars (‘Malling Exploit’, ‘Heritage’, 'Citadel', 'Sumner', 'Southland', 'Amber' and 'Malling Jewel'), so rapid genetic progress was made by recurrent selection (RS) in obtaining low-chill, good quality selections. The program is now in the second cycle of RS with many plants with chilling requirements in the range of 250 to 500 chill units (CU), good fruit qualities, vigorous erect-self supporting canes as well as spineless plants. Two advanced selections, 'Anita' (250 CU) and 'Gina' (500 CU) have been released for testing; both are productive and have good fruit qualities.
