RASPBERRY BREEDING IN SOUTHERN AUSTRALIA |

| Abstract:
The Australian raspberry industry has expanded significantly over the past ten years and many new plantings have been established in areas outside the traditional high rainfall, cool climate districts. Most production is sold fresh on east coast markets or exported. Willamette quickly became the industry standard following its introduction in 1970 but more than 40 imported cultivars and selections have been tested in a recent program. Chilcotin, Chilliwack, Comox, Nootka, Skeena, Heritage and the Scottish Crops Research Institute selection SCRI 6820/64 have already been recommended for commercial use. The absence of most raspberry pests in Australia has enabled the breeding program to concentrate on the production of early and late varieties, yield, fruit size and shelf life. Selection for cultivars suitable for alternate-year-cropping and primocane fruiting is also important. Several advanced maincrop and primocane fruiting selections are presently under commercial evaluation. | |
