CYTOKININS AND AUXINS IN CARNATION SENESCENCE AS RELATED TO CHEMICAL TREATMENTS

Author:   J. van Staden
Abstract:
The role of ethylene in the senescence of cut carnations is well established. There is however, a considerable body of literature which indicates that other growth substances such as auxins and cytokinins interact with ethylene in the senescence process. Recently considerable advances have been made in establishing the cytokinin complement in carnation flowers. Attention has also been given to cytokinin transport and metabolism in cut flowers. In this contribution these aspects are discussed in relation to some of the chemical treatments which are commonly used to extend flower longevity.
