ISHS Acta Horticulturae 261: IV International Symposium on Postharvest Physiology of Ornamental Plants

PARAMETERS INFLUENCING GERBERA CUT FLOWER LONGEVITY

Authors:   E. Garibaldi Accati, R. Jona
Abstract:
More than 300 Gerbera cultivars exist, differing in weight, diameter and form of inflorescences: these may either be simple, semidouble or double. Stem diameter and weight differ from one cultivar to the next, as do vase life and behaviour through senescence. The influence of these parameters has been investigated and none has been found to be critical in extending vase life. Because few experiments exist on the use of chemicals for extension of Gerbera vase life, we thought it useful to investigate this special field. A mix of 300 ppm HQS, 300 ppm BNA, 10-4 M AOA, 10-4 M 3,4,5 T and 20 g/l sucrose appeared to be the best keeping-solution. Furthermore, since various cultivars exhibit different osmotic pressures, this character has been related to longevity; osmotic pressure of the preservative solution has been adapted to the level of the stem osmotic pressure.
