Abstract:
Carbon dioxide and ethylene concentrations were determined in various sterile culture systems with gerbera plantlets.
High concentrations were found in closed (sealed) systems.
Elevated carbon dioxide and ethylene concentrations were also found in semi-closed systems of types that are frequently used in commercial practice.
Treatment of gerbera plantlets with 0 to 5% carbon dioxide and 0 to 0.9 μl/l ethylene showed that increased ethylene concentrations caused severe yellowing while increased carbon dioxide concentrations were clearly beneficial to this aspect.
