PELARGONIUM CUTTINGS - EFFECT OF GROWTH REGULATORS

Authors:   O. Purer, S. Mayak
Abstract:
Short-term storage or shipment of pelargonium cuttings is limited by yellowing of the leaves and poor rooting after storage. GA3 prevents yellowing, but also retards rooting of the cuttings. No effects of GA3 on carbohydrate pool or partitioning were found. Enhanced senescence by exposure to low concentrations of ethylene or shipment simulation was counteracted by GA3, and also by STS. Since GA3 did not reduce the production of ethylene, it is suggested that GA3 influences the sensitivity of the leaves to ethylene. A change in protein pattern occurred during storage, and was prevented by GA3. Application of IBA to the base of the stem eliminated the negative effect of GA3 on rooting, assuring proper rooting of the green, undamaged, GA3 treated cuttings after shipment.
