CHILLING EFFECTS ON CLERODENDRUM: INTERACTIONS OF WATER BALANCE AND ETHYLENE

Authors:   J. Tandler, A. Borochov, A.H. Halevy
Abstract:
Potted plants of clerodendrum, exposed to simulated boat shipment for more than two days, showed typical symptoms of chilling injury, including accelerated water loss and electrolyte leakage from the leaves. Elevation of the ambient humidity during chilling delayed the appearance of injury. Both water loss and exposure to chilling increased the subsequent production of ethylene by the leaves. However, ethylene production during the chilling was nill, and application of ethylene inhibitors prior to chilling did not affect the response to chilling. Ethylene thus does not appear to be directly involved in the response of clerodendrum leaves to chilling.
