Abstract:
Senescence of cut blooms (when they have attained 2/3 of their maximum diameter) of chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium cv.
Jyotsna) was tested, as affected by cobalt chloride (at 5x10-4 M), sucrose (at 0.1 M) and IAA (at 10-6, 5x10-6, 10-5 and 5x10-5M). Twenty blooms with 35 mm long stalks were dipped in injection vials containing the test solution for each treatment.
The average shelf-life was 7 days in controls, 12 to 14 days in CoCl2 (5x10-4 M), 7 days in sucrose (0.1 M) and only 3 to 4 days in IAA (5x10-6 and above) and IAA (5x10-6 and above) + sucrose (0.1 M). In CoCl2 (5x10-4 M) + sucrose (0.1 M) the vase-life was increased to between 22 and 24 days.
IAA significantly curtailed the effect of CoCl2 and CoCl2 + sucrose at all concentrations.
The maximum shelf-life obtained with CoCl2 + sucrose was reduced to 10–11 days with the addition of IAA at 10-5 M.
