EFFECT OF AMINO-OXYACETIC ACID ON COLORATION OF THE LABELLUM AND LONGEVITY OF CUT CYMBIDIUM FLOWERS

Abstract:
A pretreatment with amino-oxyacetic acid (AOA) was able to delay coloration of the labellum of individual cut Cymbidium flowers and to increase longevity. If coloration of the labellum and senescence was accelerated by emasculation AOA had a retarding effect, both on coloration and on senescence.

To delay coloration of the labellum induced by exogenous ethylene, a higher concentration of AOA is required.

If emasculated individual Cymbidium flowers were held in AOA solution for one week, the effect of AOA depended on the moment of emasculation: coloration of the lip was delayed if emasculation took place early, but AOA had only a slight effect if emasculation occurred later during the AOA treatment.

Branches of flowers, in order to obtain the same retarding effect on coloration of the labellum, needed a higher concentration of AOA as a pretreatment solution than individual flowers. Such high AOA concentrations may cause stem damage leading to early abscission of flowers.
