Abstract:
The effect of calcium nitrate added to a flower preservative solution of 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate (200 ppm) with sucrose (2%) on the keeping quality of roses (cv.
Sonia) cut at commercial maturity was studied.
Treatment with a preservative solution containing Ca-nitrate increased flower longevity by about 2–3 days over the preservative alone, both in short (20 h.) and continuous treatments.
Moreover, keeping roses continuously in the preservative solution enriched with calcium nitrate significantly reduced the rate of flower opening, preventing it from reaching the full bloom stage.
The longevity of 'Sonia' roses held continuously in a preservative solution with calcium nitrate was 11 days, as compared to 5 days for the water control.
