EFFECTS OF ETHYLENE ON ROSE OPENING

Abstract:
Exogenous application of extremely low concentrations of ethylene (as little as 20 ppb) has dramatic effects on the opening and postharvest life of rose flowers. Depending on cultivar, flower maturity, and ethylene concentration, opening may be accelerated, completely prevented, or altered dramatically. These effects are overcome by pre-treatment with STS. Examination of the kinetics of the ethylene/Ag+ interaction indicates that the interaction is competitive.
