EFFECT OF ETHYLENE ON GROWTH AND FLOWERING OF TRITELEIA LAXA

Abstract:
Exposure of recently-harvested dormant corms of Triteleia laxa Benth. cv. Queen Fabiola to C2H4 (7 days, 20 ppm) resulted in early sprouting, early flowering, more flowers per inflorescence, and increased fresh weight of daughter corms and cormels. The respiration rate of the corms increased 5–7 fold in response to C2H4 treatment, and although it declined markedly when the treated corms were returned to air, it never returned to that of the control corms. Leaves produced by ethylene-treated corms were wider and longer than those of the controls. The consequent increase in their photosynthetic capability may be the cause of the increased fresh weight of the daughter corms and cormels.
