Abstract:
If flowers of the Chrysanthemum 'Cassa' were placed in water at 20°C their water balance became negative from the first day of vase life.
This negative water balance resulted from a disturbed water uptake caused by air coming into the vessels of the stem after cutting.
Water loss of the flowers (by shipping simulation) had no influence of the water balance during vase life, unless the flowers were placed at 5°C during the first 2 hours of vase life.
In that case, fresh weight changes during vase life were correlated with the waterpotential at the start of the period of 5°C. The cutting height of the stem above soil level interfer with the effects on water uptake of air coming into the vessels.
